Spring Update II 2025

This April has been very wet, and not very warm. We just got over four inches of rain recently! It has been great for the pasture growth but not for moving the pastures!

Goats
Cocoa had triplets 4-19-20, two girls and a boy. The night after she had them, she got very sick and one of her girls died. We don’t know what happened, but we gave her a dose of oregano oil, and by the evening she was fine.
The boy is in the first picture (the one on the left if you are on a laptop).
We are getting around 2 1/2 to 3 gallons of milk a day. We have been either drinking or selling most of it. We haven’t had much success making cheese, so if anyone has any suggestions, we would be happy to hear them!

Chickens
We got all of our Whiting True-Blue pullets into three different tractors and are moving them to new pasture every day. They should start laying mid-late July, if anyone wants some, we have quite a few left for purchase! Chickens | Long Creek Farm

Garden
It finally stayed warm enough to put the plants out in the garden, no more garden in the living room! We have also got a lot of seeds planted, such as radishes, spinach, chard, lettuce, flowers, cantaloupes, chives and squash.

Orchard
We planted a cover crop in the paths of the orchard to try and improve the soil there, which isn’t very good.

We had the chickens and ducks in the orchard all winter, and the difference in growth of both the grass and the cover crop around their coops and downhill of them is very noticeable!
Quail
We hatched some of our CA quail eggs recently and sold 11 of the chicks.

New Products
If anyone is interested, we have started offering sourdough bread, quail eggs and chicken eggs for local pick up. You can see all the food products we offer here.
