Our farm is located in far Eastern OK, this area of the state is much more forested and hillier than farther south (near OK city), we also have an abundance of creeks, ponds and a few lakes in the area all of which encourage birds to call our area home. In this blog I will share a few photos of some of the birds we see on our property or in near-by parks.

Cardinal

Cardinals are here year-round and are very easy to attract to bird feeders, sometimes a bossy cardinal will guard an entire feeder (keeping all the other birds away) and sit there and eat until it is full.

Chickadee

Chickadees are also present in OK all year although you see them more often in the winter when they come to bird feeders looking for their favorite (bird feeder) food, black sunflower seeds.

Titmouse

Titmice are very talkative song birds and flock to bird feeders in the winter, but are equally as abundant in all seasons (you will often only hear them, they are loud!)

Indigo bunting

These beautiful buntings are a rare sight and only live here in the warm months.

Painted bunting

Painted buntings are a bit more common here than indigo buntings, but they are very shy, and we rarely see them.

These birds come in huge flocks in the autumn and winter and are rather noisy.

Ruby throated hummingbird

Hummingbirds are very tiny iridescent birds and are easily attracted by planting Morning Glories which they absolutely love!

American Goldfinch

Junco

Here in eastern OK, we have several verities of juncos, they only show up in the late fall and winter. They like eating millet on the ground but rarely come to our hanging feeders.

Blue jay

Blue jays live here year-round, they can get very loud when the pecans start ripening and a lot of blue jays are together at once.

We see eastern blue birds all year, in the spring they will come to bird houses we built but easily get chased off by house sparrows.

We often see these weird looking birds around the lake, but this one was fishing in our pound and resting in the pecan trees on our property.

Yellow Warbler

Warblers are usually very shy and since they are tiny it is rare to see one.

Barn Swallow

Barn swallows are everywhere in the spring (including building nests on the tops of your outdoor lights), but once it is summer you rarely ever see any of these birds.

We also see crows, vultures, several kinds of hawks and a few different water birds, but photographing birds is a challenge since they can fly, which means they can get away from people fast!
